Service Details

David Eugene Smith, 70, passed away Monday, February 9, 2015. A service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with a celebration of life gathering to follow until 5 p.m. Burial will be in the summer at Elk Chapel Cemetery in Lamoni, IA.

David was born March 19, 1944 to Marjorie and Harold Smith in Leon, Iowa and grew up on the family farm. He was the “one and only” student in his class at country school. David graduated from Lamoni Community Schools and attended Graceland University.

On June 14, 1964, David married Donna Jeanes. To this union two children were born, Sherri Lynn in September 1966 and Brian Eugene in May 1971. David was employed with Cadco, Inc., Albion Company and Agra Partners, Limited until his retirement in March of 2012.

He was a loving husband, wonderful father, and a great brother and son. David made friends easily and kept them for his lifetime. He was a mentor to everyone, especially his nephews, nieces, and younger co-workers. David enjoyed life to the fullest and always said he was “10 foot tall and bullet proof.” He wasn’t cancer proof. David was a past member of the Des Moines Feed and Grain Club, the Izaak Walton League and the NRA. He loved hunting, fishing and anything outdoorsy.

David is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Donna; his daughter, Sherri (Jamie) Caldwell of Ankeny, IA; his son, Brian (Linda) of Dexter, IA; his grandson, Ryan Klopf of Ankeny, IA; brother, Daniel (Monika) of Buhl, Germany; and his sister, Betty of Lamoni, IA; brothers-in-law, Gary (Helen) Jeanes of Eagleville, MO, Casey (Maurita) Jeanes of Lamoni, IA; sister-in law, Ann (Merlin) Matteson of Independence, IA; many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins; and a contingency of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Doris and Robert Jeanes; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
