Thomas Castine Sr., 94, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015 at University Park Nursing Home. Services will be held Friday, February 13, 2015 at Greater Love Church of God in Christ, 1440 DeWolf Street, Des Moines. Family will begin greeting guests at 10:00 a.m. with funeral service at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Thomas Castine was born December 6, 1920 to Mary Robinson and Leonard Castine in Napoleonville, Louisiana. Thomas was educated in the Napoleonville school system and was employed as a Laborer for process sugar. At the age of 17 Thomas joined the United States Army and served proudly in World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after serving in North Africa, Italy and Panteleni. He served as a U.S. Army cook helping to prepare meals for 95 men. After leaving the army in the early fifties, Thomas moved to Iowa following his oldest sister, Eliza. He resided in Des Moines, Iowa until his death.

He attended Morning Star Baptist Church under pastor ship of Reverend Alex Crawford. He was united in holy matrimony to Ann Stanton. No children were born into this union.

Thomas loved traveling, cooking, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. He was known across the city as everyone’s Uncle Thomas. He opened his house and heart to anyone in need and always had a story to tell and bright smile and hearty laugh to go with it. He was known for his hats and suspenders. Always a sharp dresser and hardworking man he gave wholeheartedly to his many nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his sons, Thomas Castine Jr. and Sean Castine Sr.; grandsons, Kentrell Castine and Sean Castine Jr.; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Kamarie, and Sean III; nephews, Edward (Sylvia) Dorsey and Larry (Marilyn) Dorsey; special niece, Chantell (Earley) Windham; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and other acquaintances.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Lloyd, Leonard, Lilius, Lawrence, William, James, Mary Eliza Dorsey, Josie Mae Bennett, and Christine Duplantis.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the family in memory of Thomas.
