Dr. Boyd Nelson Nordmark passed away January 10, 2015. Born in Ft. Dodge, April 12, 1930, he grew up there, graduating from Ft. Dodge High School in 1948. Boyd attended the University of Iowa, graduating from the School of Dentistry in 1955 and was a member of both Sigma Phi Epsilon and Delta Sigma Delta Dental fraternities.

Dr. Nordmark practiced dentistry for 59 years, improving the health of thousands of patients. He took the greatest of pride in his career and only closed his practice shortly before his death.

In 1993, he met Shirley Garland, the love of his life, and the two were together for the rest of his life. Shirley worked with Boyd in the dental practice for many years.

Boyd joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1966, and served as both Deacon and Usher. He was a Past President of the Za-Ga-Zig Greeters Shriners Lodge and twice Past Master of the Auburn-Union Park Masonic Lodge. He was also active in Kiwanis and the Highland Park Businessmen’s Club where he served as president.

Boyd enjoyed travelling the world and visited Thailand and Japan with Friendship Force and visited Europe with Shirley. He loved music, especially the jazz music of his youth, and filled his dental office with the sounds of Bix Beiderbecke and Dave Brubeck. He was a member of the Leica Club, and his photos decorated his office and his home. When he was young, he raced in car rallies. He loved cars, especially his Jaguars, and as he got older, Cadillacs. He was a member of the Sports Car Club of America and a supporter of the Des Moines Grand Prix.

Dr. Nordmark was preceded in death by his mother, Grace-Lee; his younger twin sisters, Anne and Joy; and his stepdaughter, Susan Garland.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughter, Barbara Hunt from Kansas City; his son, Emerson and grandson, Pierson from Anacortes, WA; his stepdaughter, Nancy Martinez and her children, Kamea, Kim, Scott and Alejandro; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Avenue. Family will begin greeting friends at 10:00 a.m. with memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Burial of cremated remains will take place at Ft. Dodge Memorial Park at a later date.
