Dr. Boyd Nordmark
January 10, 2015
Dr. Boyd Nelson Nordmark passed away January 10, 2015. Born in Ft. Dodge, April 12, 1930, he grew up there, graduating from Ft. Dodge High School in 1948. Boyd attended the University of Iowa, graduating from the School of Dentistry in 1955 and was a member of both Sigma Phi Epsilon and Delta Sigma Delta Dental fraternities.
Dr. Nordmark practiced dentistry for 59 years, improving the health of thousands of patients. He took the greatest of pride in his career and only closed his practice shortly before his death.
In 1993, he met Shirley Garland, the love of his life, and the two were together for the rest of his life. Shirley worked with Boyd in the dental practice for many years.
Boyd joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1966, and served as both Deacon and Usher. He was a Past President of the Za-Ga-Zig Greeters Shriners Lodge and twice Past Master of the Auburn-Union Park Masonic Lodge. He was also active in Kiwanis and the Highland Park Businessmen’s Club where he served as president.
Boyd enjoyed travelling the world and visited Thailand and Japan with Friendship Force and visited Europe with Shirley. He loved music, especially the jazz music of his youth, and filled his dental office with the sounds of Bix Beiderbecke and Dave Brubeck. He was a member of the Leica Club, and his photos decorated his office and his home. When he was young, he raced in car rallies. He loved cars, especially his Jaguars, and as he got older, Cadillacs. He was a member of the Sports Car Club of America and a supporter of the Des Moines Grand Prix.
Dr. Nordmark was preceded in death by his mother, Grace-Lee; his younger twin sisters, Anne and Joy; and his stepdaughter, Susan Garland.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughter, Barbara Hunt from Kansas City; his son, Emerson and grandson, Pierson from Anacortes, WA; his stepdaughter, Nancy Martinez and her children, Kamea, Kim, Scott and Alejandro; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Avenue. Family will begin greeting friends at 10:00 a.m. with memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Burial of cremated remains will take place at Ft. Dodge Memorial Park at a later date. Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Kavanagh on 56th.
The family would like to extend thanks to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Kavanagh on 56th, Scottish Rite, Za Ga Zig Greeters, and Auburn-Union Park Masonic Lodge.

Boyd and I were classmates in dental school so we have known each other a long time sharing experiences that are memorable and treasured. Even though we did not see each other frequently we were good friends. I will miss him at the dental meetings where I could always count on a sincere, cordial and happy meeting. Boyd was always represented our profession professionally. He was always a gentlemen and will be well remembered.

When I started going to Dr. Nordmark for my dental needs I no longer considered it a dreadful task. He always made it relaxing with his music and great conversation. The family is in our prayers and thoughts.

Our sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to Shirley and the entire Nordmark family. Boyd was our first and only dentist since we moved to DM in 1999. We greatly enjoyed our dental appointments visiting with both Boyd and Shirley. When Boyd found out Darrell was also a mason, our relationship grew to include Masonic events. He will be greatly missed.
