Richard John Carlson
January 10, 2015
Richard “Dick” Carlson, 69, was born January 19, 1945, in Fraser, Iowa to John and Mary Carlson. He passed away peacefully at his home on January 10, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dick retired from Firestone in 1990. He was a member of Ankeny First United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family and friends. Dick also enjoyed woodworking, stained glass, and spoiling his cats and dogs.
Dick is survived by his wife of 34 years, Deanna; children, Vicki (Matt) Zeimet, Brian (Stacey) Carlson, Heather (Mark) Scheuermann, and Keenan (fiancé Kelly Turner) Carlson; grandchildren, Jeremy (Laura) Carlson, Amber DeGroot, Brenna Carlson, Lilly Carlson, and Matthew Scheuermann; great-grandchildren, Emma & Elijah Carlson, and Brooke Peterson; brother, Gerald (Lin) Carlson; sister, Jolene (John) Swanson; former spouse, Janice Carlson; as well as a host of other family and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Karen Day.
Dick underwent a heart transplant in 1989. Because of this gift, his family would like to thank the donor’s family for the additional time they were given with him.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with the family receiving visitors one hour prior to service time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League or Salvation Army in loving memory of Dick.

I just came across this obituary. I am so sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I am part of the volleyball gang at Mercy Hospital's therapy pool. We ALL miss Dick so much! He always had something to smile about.
I ran into Dick and his wife at Long John Silver's/A&W several months before he passed away. I hope you remember me Deanna.
