Howard Marshall Clifford was born December 9, 1922 in Holt, MO, the son of John and Maude Cook Clifford. He passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines at the age of 92.
Howard served in the U.S. Navy and was employed by the Des Moines school system for 35 years. He was a good Christian man and enjoyed gardening and growing his own flowers. Howard loved spending time with his family and was always ready to help others.
Howard is survived by his children, Wayne Clifford, Lee Mathers, and Pat Romeo; sisters, Margie Halstead and Doris John; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Clifford Deans.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Hamilton’s Southtown, 5400 SW 9th St, Des Moines.

Every day, Howard put a smile on the face of those who knew him, and even those who did not. He was truly original, and his love for others bloomed like one of his prized tulips he fettered over hour upon hour. Howard was a friend. The guy you could always go to when the going got rough. I remember meeting Howard in '93. I was blown away by his optimism and drive for life. As the years trickled past, Howard was always by my side, and I his. I remember his gruff tenor as we watched the game. Howard will always be a part of my being, and his impact will re-vertebrate through eons of life, love, and peace.

Howard Clifford was such a pure soul. Although I did not know him in my personal life or spend much time with him, I can tell that his life was lead from a position of great positivism. There is an inexplicable emotion that emanates throughout me whenever I think of his name. It has been years since his passing, and yet I still remember his life almost every day. We lost one of the gems of this earth on January 6, 2015, and we will never have someone equal to that energy as Howard was. My sincerest condolences towards all that knew him, and all that didn't, because regardless of how you knew him, his life mattered.
