Florence Lucille Gaffney, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, December 8, 2014.

She was born in Waterloo, IA on February 16, 1929 to Beulah and William Craig. She married Lehan Joseph Gaffney at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo, IA on May 9, 1950. She resided in Sumner, IA for 53 years.

She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Waterloo, IA, where she was a dedicated cheerleader and troublemaker. She was known by family and friends for her skill in sewing and crafting, and proudly displayed dozens of hand-crafted Santa Clause statues in her home during the holiday season.

She is survived by her sisters, Marie Schlorff of Waterloo, IA, JoAnne Rathjen of Mason City, IA, Kathleen Jensen of Cameron, WI, and Charlene Dahlin, of Isanti, MN; brothers Ed and Pat Craig, of Waterloo, IA; two daughters, Christine Gaffney Peden of Des Moines, IA, Victoria (Vernon) Smith of Highlands Ranch, CO; four grandchildren, Craig (Jill) Smith of New York, NY, Michelle (Lance) Loveday of Louisville, CO, Aaron (Tricia) Peden of Seattle, WA, and Alexandra Gaffney-Peden of Des Moines, IA; and one great grandchild, Ulysses Peden, son of Aaron and Tricia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Gaffney; parents Beulah and William Craig; brothers Bill, Dick, Tom, Bob, Jim, and Roger Craig; and sisters Eileen Stange and Monica Cashman.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and will be laid to rest aside her husband at Mount Cavalry Cemetery in Sumner, IA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Iowa, Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA, or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Sumner, IA.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
