Roger A. Johnson, 77, passed away Monday, November 10, 2014 at the Mitchell Village Care Center.
Roger was born December 17, 1936 in Des Moines to Darlene and Clell Johnson. He worked as a fireman from 1966 to 1989 and served on the Civil Service Commission. Roger was also an E.M.T. and worked in the Red Cross Room at the Civic Center. He loved his job at the Civic Center and enjoyed getting his picture taken with numerous celebrities from Johnnie Cash to Liza Minnelli.
Roger is survived by his daughter Diane and son Greg, seven grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Terrie Schreurs.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff at Mitchell Village Care Center for their compassionate care of Roger.

I knew Roger from my time on the Des Moines Fire Dept. We worked together at Station #4 at 9th and University, where at times, I was his driver on the medic squad. Roger was just a "kick". He had such a great sense of humor, only rivaled by his distaste for the department hierarchy. Roger's personality was one of the reasons you never wanted to miss a day of work. He loved to "mess" with anyone at the station, and no one was safe. Roger always pulled his weight at a fire, and was a more than competent fire medic. He was well liked by everyone who knew him, and enjoyed himself to the fullest, no matter the situation. It grieves me to hear of his passing, and he will certainly be greatly missed by all who had the honor and pleasure of knowing him.
