Service Details

Frances Carroll passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. She was 85 years old. Frances was born on February 18, 1929 in Woden, Iowa, the daughter of John and Inez (Bell) Pollard. She grew up on a farm riding horses bareback, yodeling and doing chores with her siblings. Her fearless spirit worried family and others; and it was that spirit that carried her through the trials and tribulations she endured. She moved to Des Moines in 1948.

Frances was independent, hardworking, active, energetic, fun loving, spunky and full of life right up to the very end. She had a razor sharp mind and lived on the Southside most of her life, moving to Norwalk after retirement. Frances enjoyed playing bingo at Meskwaki Casino in Tama, traveling, playing cards and reading mystery novels. She also enjoyed listening to Bluegrass and Country music and was an avid Miami Dolphin fan. Above all, she will be remembered as a “mom” to many, a caregiver and always willing to take in those that needed a helping hand. There were always cookies in her cookie jar, she loved throwing the annual family 4th of July party and not even Santa could top her Christmas Eve gathering.

Frances is survived by her son, Dewayne (Lori Brewer) Carroll; daughter, Debbie (Dan) Belieu; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and one due in December; sisters, Margaret (Rich) Drake and Helen Nyman; very special nephew, Mike Moen; dear friend, Alice Uhlman; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; sons, Dennis, Danny, Dale, Darrell and David Carroll; and her siblings, Gladys Matson, Ray Pollard and Eugene Pollard.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 7, 2014 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League or JoAnne Milby’s Animal Sanctuary.

**Due to the road construction on SW 9th Street, the entrance to the funeral home is off of Fleur or SW 14th Street to Kenyon heading east.
