Stephen Robert "Bob" Barry

Stephen Robert “Bob” Barry, 85, of Urbandale, passed away from Alzheimer’s on November 4, 2014 at Calvin Community in Des Moines. A visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by a mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church, 4600 Meredith Drive on Saturday, November 8, 2014 followed by burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Bob was born November 27, 1928 to Stephen W. and Helen (Barret) Barry in Decatur County, Iowa. He was a graduate of Leon High School, where he was involved in all sports, including four years of football, and was a graduate of Chillicothe Business College.

Bob moved to Des Moines in 1948 and was employed by Armstrong Tire and Rubber Co. as an inspector a few years before accepting management positions with Sears Roebuck for 38 years. Following early retirement in 1987, Bob accepted a part-time position with Amaco Motor Club until they relocated to Chicago. He was an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 17 years and earned numerous awards.

Bob enjoyed gardening, sports (especially football), auto racing, boating activities with the family’s Cobalt and traveling, which included six cruises.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Phyllis Barry of Urbandale; daughter, Diane Heidorn of Urbandale; son, Ronald Barry of Clive; grandson, Bobby (Jennifer) Heidorn of Pearland, TX; and sister, Pauline Davis of Anaheim, CA.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Barry.
