Michael Nicholson
August 24, 2014
The gates of heaven opened to receive our beloved Michael C. Nicholson, 63, on Sunday, August 24, 2014. He left us doing what he loved, fishing with the love of his life.
Michael was born October 8, 1950 in Des Moines, Iowa to Merritt "Nick" and Betty (Rucker) Nicholson. He attended East High School and earned his GED while in the US Army. Michael was employed by Armstrong Tires for years and then by the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad until his retirement.
Michael was a loving husband and a wonderful father and grandfather. He and his wife, Peggy, had been married for 44 years, but they had known each other and been best friends since they were 10 and 8 years old. He took part in a pool league for over 10 years, was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed hunting and camping. Michael was a previous member of the Eastside Jaycees and a current member of AMVETS Post #2.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; children, Karrie (Sean) Nicholson-Williams, Michael II (Melissa), and Joseph (Megan); grandchildren, Joey, Michael III, Dakota, Montana, Macy, Weston, Jovani, and Kristopher; great-grandchildren, Peyton and Holly; and sisters, Laurie (Rick) Coles and Lorna (Norbert) Lepley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Glen Nicholson.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service with military honors will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, August 29, also at the funeral home. Private family burial will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be directed to AMVETS Post #2, 2818 5th Ave, Des Moines, IA, 50313.
We will miss our hero, our father, the man of our hearts. Rest in peace, find all the fishing holes.
