Raymond Pettis

Raymond P. Pettis, 64, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2014 at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa where he had been a resident for the past 30 years.
Ray was born May 25, 1950 to Raymond H. and Ruby (Dorhn) Pettis and was a 1969 graduate of Saydel High School. He served in the Marines during the Vietnam War. He was employed by the U.S. Post Office and a member of the V.F.W. Ray enjoyed riding motorcycles, especially Harleys and Gold Wings. He liked target practice, shooting guns, and playing cards. He was a people person, always ready with a hand shake. His favorite sayings were, “I’m a Marine” and “Whatever”, and he always said them with a smile.
Ray is survived by his sister, Lee Smith and brother, Maurice (Debbie) Webb Jr., both of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Tabitha Ann Pettis of Unionville, MO; step-children, Jeremy (Jenny) Long and Christy Long; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond H. Pettis; mother, Ruby Pettis Webb; step-father, Maurice Webb; and brother-in-law, Michael Smith.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 14, 2014, also at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Ray you were quite the character while at IVH. I first met Ray while I worked at the IVH front desk switchboard. Ray would always be on the move to go to Des Moines to see his sister Lee. Ray, you can go anywhere now; may you rest in peace
