Service Details

Agnes Bernal was born into eternal life on Friday, August 8th, 2014, with her family beside her, surrounding her with love. She was born on February 1st, 1923 in Horton, Kansas to Julius and Martha (Morado) Vallejo.

While a woman of few words, Agnes never struggled expressing the fullness of her love for her family. She possessed a powerful, ceaseless work ethic, an immense capacity for sacrifice, and an unerring ability to make each of her loved ones feel like they were the most precious thing in the world to her. When they were hurting, she comforted them. When they were comfortable, she challenged them. When they rose to that challenge, her eyes literally twinkled with pride.

Agnes Bernal was born into eternal life on Friday, August 8th, 2014, with her family beside her, surrounding her with love. She was born on February 1st, 1923 in Horton, Kansas to Julius and Martha (Morado) Vallejo.

While a woman of few words, Agnes lived out every part of the word “love”. She possessed a powerful, ceaseless work ethic, an immense capacity for sacrifice, and an unerring ability to make each of her loved ones feel like they were the most precious thing in the world to her. When they were broken, she fixed them. When they were mended, she lifted them. When they soared, her pride was so evident that you could see it in the twinkle of her eyes.

Agnes lived a wonderfully full life. In 1945, she married Nazario Bernal, with whom she raised five children. During the Second World War, Agnes served her country by testing ammunition at the Ordnance Plant, after which time she enjoyed a thirty-year career as a bookbinder for Meredith Publishing, retiring in 1985. An active parishioner of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Agnes was a devoted and passionate witness of her Catholic faith. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 532. Agnes also enjoyed camping, reading, crocheting, singing and dancing, and was a great fan of Elvis Presley’s music.

She is survived by her five children: Julius (Louise) Bernal, Rosemary (John) Soto, Rita (Jack) Simpson, Diana (Mike) Meyers, and Linda (Tom) McIlhon; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sisters: Helen Lopez, Margaret Diaz, Florence Terronez, Dorothy Luke, Benita Cacari, and Linda (Bob) Patton; sister-in-law, Estolia Bernal; brother-in-law, Phil Knight; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other beloved family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Nazario; sister, Josie Knight; and brothers: Felix, Salvador, and Jimmy Vallejo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, which is located at 15 Indianola Road in Des Moines. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Glendale cemetery. Family will greet visitors from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 11, 2014 with a rosary beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines.
