Harlan Mendenhall, Jr., 62, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center.
Harlan was born April 16, 1952 in Des Moines to Harlan Sr. and Maxine Mendenhall. He served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1976. Harlan retired from the City of Des Moines after over 20 years of service. He enjoyed the outdoors, coaching his son’s Little League teams, spoiling children and animals alike, and going on vacations with his family. Harlan had the biggest heart and was loved by all who knew him. His greatest joy in life came from spending time with his family and friends.
Harlan is survived by his loving wife, Shelley; son, Chris (Angie) Mendenhall; brother, Sterling (Janilla) Mendenhall; and a host of extended family and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Carole Lines, Randy Mendenhall and Tommy Mendenhall.
The family will greet friends on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m.with a Celebration of Life Service honoring Harlan at 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home - 5400 SW 9th Street.

I was saddened to see Hoyt pass. I was in the army with Hoyt at Ft. Bragg, N. C. I got thinking about him and looked him up on my phone. That's how I found out. I have very fond memories of our duty together. He was a happy, ( almost kiddish ) kind of guy, a lot of fun. I'm glad our paths crossed. So, to you and your son, I send my deepest sympathy.

Shelly, I am so sorry for your loss.

Sincere condolences from my family to family and friends of Harlan. I had known him for over 60 years. We played together as youngsters, fished as young boys, partied as teenagers and he was 'best man' at my wedding. He continued to be just that until his final moments.

Shelley and Chris I am so sorry for your loss. Harlan was a great man who was loved and respected by many. He was like a second father to me for most of my life and I loved him very much. If either of you need anything at all don't hesitate to call me.
