DeWayne Steward

DeWayne Russell Steward, 88, was born on September 3, 1925 in Polk City, Iowa and passed away on June 22, 2014 at Kavanaugh House on 56th in Des Moines.
DeWayne graduated from East High School in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. In 1946, he met and married his wife of 49 years, Patricia (O’Brien) Steward. They raised their four children on the south side of Des Moines where he served as district fire chief for the City of Des Moines. He enjoyed gardening, collecting coins and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Mary Logsdon; and his sons-in-law, Mike Fraizer and Brad Harrison. DeWayne is survived by his daughters, Carol Fraizer and Sue Harrison; son, John Steward; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. with the Rosary recited at 6 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
