Service Details

Thelma Maye Stolz, 96, passed away June 11, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA. Services will be held Friday, June 13, 2014 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA at 12 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Mystic, IA.

Thelma was born on February 9, 1918 in Mercer, MO to Irene (Hamilton) and Joe Hassen. She married Lemuel Stolz and worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for Stolz Mobile Homes from 1967 to 1981 in Centerville, IA until they retired in 1981. The couple wintered in Texas and traveled internationally. Thelma was an accomplished pianist and author. She wrote a cookbook, and a book on Mystic, IA during the depression. She was also an amateur artist and entered many amateur artist contests in Iowa. In addition, Thelma hosted a religious music program on KCOG Radio and even made a record.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Ruth A. (Paul) Poli of Inman, SC, Ted (Sharon) Stolz of Ottumwa, IA, Virginia (George) Schiel of Englewood, CO, and Charlotte (Howard) Dunbar of Johnson City, TN; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel E. Stolz; her sister, Opalene Haggarty; step-daughter, Mary Ashby; and infant daughter, Alice Jean Stolz.
