Service Details

Veda Amal Kirk was born in North Salem Township, Linn County, Missouri on December 22, 1918. She was the youngest child of Eli and Susan Ann (Suzanne) Powell Kirk. Her mother said at the moment of her birth that "snow flakes were softly falling and sliding down the windows".

She died June 3, 2014, at age 95, at the home of her niece, June Barron, in Altoona, Iowa. She was surrounded by family and Hospice members. She slipped peacefully away as the Music Therapist was softly singing, "In the Garden".

Veda's childhood was spent on a farm near the community of Shelby, Linn County, Missouri. She was a graduate of Shelby Consolidated High School, Class of 1937.

She married Charles Edwin Seymour on September 1, 1941. They began their married life in Brookfield, Missouri. W.W.II began in December, 1941, and by 1942, Eddie was in the army. Veda was able to join him, living on base, during part of his training. While Eddie was overseas, Poss went home to the farm to live with her parents. While there, she successfully raised a fine flock of sheep, of which she was very proud.

After the war, the young couple lived in Brookfield where Eddie worked for the Kroger store. They later bought their own neighborhood grocery store in Chillicothe, Missouri, and lived there for several years.

During the 1950's they lived in Des Moines, Iowa, where Eddie was associated with the A&P. They lived in Marceline, Linn County, Missouri for several years, while Eddie was manager of the Marceline A&P Grocery store.

In about 1961 they became co-owners, with Eddie's brother Donald Seymour, of the Grand River Press in Trenton, Missouri. They stayed there until 1988, when they moved back to Brookfield. Eddie died in October, 2001.

Veda was a homemaker, well known for her excellent house keeping skills. She loved to read and dance, take long walks, play cards with friends, and travel. She greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie; parents and grandparents; her three sisters -- Vera (Rauer) Edmonds, Beulah "Boots" Simpson and Ada B. Beal; and her half-brother, Leman.
