Michael James McBride
June 01, 2014
Michael James McBride, 45, was born June 14, 1968, to James and Marlene McBride in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He passed away at his home in Ankeny, Iowa on June 1, 2014.
Michael grew up in the Des Moines area and graduated from Urbandale High School. He worked for the Des Moines Police Department for 23 years, graduating Academy Class 53. During that time, he served the community in the uniform patrol unit, narcotics unit, airport unit, and most recently as Detective, Special Assignment Unit. In his youth, Michael was honored as the second-youngest ever to receive the Eagle Scout award, and he was always supportive of his father's active participation in Shriners.
Michael loved live music, travel, food and especially his family and many friends. Michael was a creative, passionate man who lived a robust life without fear. He was dedicated to those whom he loved, and demonstrated that love at every opportunity.
Most of all, Michael loved his wife Laura profoundly, and the two were inseparable from the time of their first meeting fourteen years ago.
Michael is survived by his wife, Laura; sisters, Peg (Terry) Meewes, Sherry (Romaine) Curtis, and Patti Payne, in addition to five nieces and one nephew; parents-in-law, John and Julie Schreurs; brother-in-law, Rob Schreurs; as well as a large circle of friends he considered his family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 4 to 8 p.m., also at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Shriners International in loving memory of Michael.
Condolences for the family may be offered online at

We grieve with you, yet cannot really fathom the pain. Our love and ongoing prayers are with you in this most difficult time. Your entire family and friends grieve with you; and we believe there is comfort for those who grieve. We know that the many positive memories are those which will endure.

Laura you are in our thoughts and prayers. May God give you peace during this difficult time. Hold tightly to those that love you, you will need them and they will be there for you.
Borrowed from a friend...
No one knew the torment,
That you were going through;
We only kept on seeing
What we really wanted to.
We saw the outward smile,
But not your inner pain;
We never really dreamt,
That you would never smile again.
Forgive us if we failed to see,
What we could do to aid;
Or if we failed to comprehend,
How much you were afraid.
We pray your mental anguish,
Will now forever cease;
And that your deep anxieties,
Will be replaced by peace.
We know your pain invaded,
Every single thought you had;
It made you cry internally,
And deeply, deeply sad.
But we in turn remember,
The good times, not the bad;
We remember when you smiled at us,
And not when you were sad.
So when we think about your life,
We won't dwell upon its close;
We'll remember all the good times,
And forget about life's blows.
We'll remember all the happiness,
The joy and not the tears;
The assurance and the confidence,
And not irrational fears.
Our lives have all been better,
Because you have been there;
So now we leave your memory,
In God's all-loving care.

Words can't even begin to express how saddened I was to learn of Mike's passing. You guys are fantastic people and have always been very kind to me. I am living in South Dakota now and will actually be traveling to Michigan at the time of the services, so I won't be able to make it. Please accept my condolences from the bottom of my heart. Laura, please lean on your friends during this difficult time; they are plentiful and willing to do anything that you may need, no matter what it is. God bless you and your family

Mike, Id say you were responsible for my incredible high school years. Nearly 30 years ago you befriended a couple of kids from Des Moiness south side who were into skateboards and weird music and introduced us to world of like-minded people from all over central Iowa. You always had a smile and saw the positive side in everything. To Laura, his family and friends, my deepest condolences.
RIP Mike.

This message comes with so many mixed emotions....met you because of my husband, you became my special friend, you were an important part of our wedding, our daughters name sake, our daughters Godfather, someone we could call on anytime and you would be there to help. I love you very much, I will miss you, but I will always be reminded of you when I look at Brent and Paige Mykel. I know that you are NOW wrapped tightly in many Angels arms and will see you again one day......Peace be with you.....
