Michael James McBride
June 01, 2014
Michael James McBride, 45, was born June 14, 1968, to James and Marlene McBride in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He passed away at his home in Ankeny, Iowa on June 1, 2014.
Michael grew up in the Des Moines area and graduated from Urbandale High School. He worked for the Des Moines Police Department for 23 years, graduating Academy Class 53. During that time, he served the community in the uniform patrol unit, narcotics unit, airport unit, and most recently as Detective, Special Assignment Unit. In his youth, Michael was honored as the second-youngest ever to receive the Eagle Scout award, and he was always supportive of his father's active participation in Shriners.
Michael loved live music, travel, food and especially his family and many friends. Michael was a creative, passionate man who lived a robust life without fear. He was dedicated to those whom he loved, and demonstrated that love at every opportunity.
Most of all, Michael loved his wife Laura profoundly, and the two were inseparable from the time of their first meeting fourteen years ago.
Michael is survived by his wife, Laura; sisters, Peg (Terry) Meewes, Sherry (Romaine) Curtis, and Patti Payne, in addition to five nieces and one nephew; parents-in-law, John and Julie Schreurs; brother-in-law, Rob Schreurs; as well as a large circle of friends he considered his family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 4 to 8 p.m., also at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Shriners International in loving memory of Michael.

My heart goes out to you. Thinking of a week or so ago when you looked at him with such love and then told me what a great man he is and it was so moving to see that love at that moment. We also talked that day about being a strong confident woman. I know you are and now is the time it will show. Sending love your way. Caroline and family

Dear Laura: the hole you feel right now will be there always for good reason - the love it represents was worthy and valuable enough to merit the meaningfulness of this void you feel. But face the next moments and the next days being grateful, grateful, grateful - for having the chance to love someone you knew was awesome, and that will always deserve your positive memories and unending affection. You and your life will grow and your capacity to love will grow and the hole will remain there as a reminder of a great happy episode of your life. You are strong and will get stronger, and you will continue to live and love more. It pains me that you have to go through this, but I am supremely confident in your strength and ability to handle this. You are in my thoughts tonight, and I commit to send positive energy your way, and I do hope that you continue to indeed celebrate the love that you got to experience. You'll never be alone, cos he's there with you. And... "this is what you should know about losing somebody you love. They do not travel alone. You go with them". -- Augusten Burroughs, 'This is How'

It is with great sadness that I write this to say I will miss u so much Michael. Many wonderful memories I will forever cherish. U were always there for me always listened and told me ur thoughts even when u knew I wasn't going to like what u had to say. U were there for me through some really ruff times in my life and I will always remember that. I love ya and I know u will forever be watching down on all of us from heaven. U touched so many lives. Go rest high on that mountain now and forever be in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with Laura the family!

Its hard to say how much we will miss Mike. We loved his sense of humor and the long talks about everything and anything. Mike truly was a good friend and will be missed more than anyone could ever imagine. Our hearts go out to Laura and his family.
