Michael James McBride
June 01, 2014
Michael James McBride, 45, was born June 14, 1968, to James and Marlene McBride in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He passed away at his home in Ankeny, Iowa on June 1, 2014.
Michael grew up in the Des Moines area and graduated from Urbandale High School. He worked for the Des Moines Police Department for 23 years, graduating Academy Class 53. During that time, he served the community in the uniform patrol unit, narcotics unit, airport unit, and most recently as Detective, Special Assignment Unit. In his youth, Michael was honored as the second-youngest ever to receive the Eagle Scout award, and he was always supportive of his father's active participation in Shriners.
Michael loved live music, travel, food and especially his family and many friends. Michael was a creative, passionate man who lived a robust life without fear. He was dedicated to those whom he loved, and demonstrated that love at every opportunity.
Most of all, Michael loved his wife Laura profoundly, and the two were inseparable from the time of their first meeting fourteen years ago.
Michael is survived by his wife, Laura; sisters, Peg (Terry) Meewes, Sherry (Romaine) Curtis, and Patti Payne, in addition to five nieces and one nephew; parents-in-law, John and Julie Schreurs; brother-in-law, Rob Schreurs; as well as a large circle of friends he considered his family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 4 to 8 p.m., also at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Shriners International in loving memory of Michael.

I also new mike for almost 30 years and he did always have a big smile waiting for you and he always knew how to make you laugh. He didn't see in color... Handicap... Personality... Or personal quirks. The one thing I admired most about Mike was his give a crap attitude, if you didn't like him he didn't care... If something went wrong ...no problem. He was his own personality...his own man... his own spirit... That's what made us love him so much. My only regret is that I didn't stay closer in touch as we grew older because I missed out on what a beautiful person I know he became as a man.
Laura my heart felt sympathy to you, I can't imagine what you're going through...our thoughts and prayers to you, your family, his family and his extended family on the police force. I know the tremendous impact he had on ALL of our lives as kids... I can only imagine the effect he had on you. Deepest sympathy ?

I first knew Mike on a professional level more than 20 years ago. I would stop the shoplifters in the retail store. Mike would respond to the calls and take custody. More recently, I've had the privilege to get to know him on a more personal level. Mike was so genuine. He had a way about him that could make everyone feel like family and a talent for bringing smiles and laughter to any conversation. He will be missed greatly.
Laura, My heart is heavy with sorrow for your loss. I hope all the love and support received from friends and family will bring you some comfort and peace during this most difficult time.
