Michael James McBride
June 01, 2014
Michael James McBride, 45, was born June 14, 1968, to James and Marlene McBride in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He passed away at his home in Ankeny, Iowa on June 1, 2014.
Michael grew up in the Des Moines area and graduated from Urbandale High School. He worked for the Des Moines Police Department for 23 years, graduating Academy Class 53. During that time, he served the community in the uniform patrol unit, narcotics unit, airport unit, and most recently as Detective, Special Assignment Unit. In his youth, Michael was honored as the second-youngest ever to receive the Eagle Scout award, and he was always supportive of his father's active participation in Shriners.
Michael loved live music, travel, food and especially his family and many friends. Michael was a creative, passionate man who lived a robust life without fear. He was dedicated to those whom he loved, and demonstrated that love at every opportunity.
Most of all, Michael loved his wife Laura profoundly, and the two were inseparable from the time of their first meeting fourteen years ago.
Michael is survived by his wife, Laura; sisters, Peg (Terry) Meewes, Sherry (Romaine) Curtis, and Patti Payne, in addition to five nieces and one nephew; parents-in-law, John and Julie Schreurs; brother-in-law, Rob Schreurs; as well as a large circle of friends he considered his family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 4 to 8 p.m., also at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Shriners International in loving memory of Michael.

Yeah, we still think about.. smile about.. and remember you Mike... About 40 years ago now myself and Mike Miller met you and Jeff Oxenrider at 'Teen Land' or whatever it was called on the south side. You, Jeff, Mike, myself, and what I learned was Christine Knuth were the only people hitting the floor for stuff like Modern English, New Order, Love and Rockets, etc...
Fast forward to a couple weeks later and I'm at your house when your dad asks you to go pick-up a keg for him. We get into your car, you fire it up, hit the take deck and out comes Haircut 100 'Love Plus One'. I was floored! My punk idol was listening to Haircut 100! LOL
Hasn't been a time in the past 10 years where that song comes on and I don't think about you and the friend you were to me.
RIP Mike

Two years ago, I couldn't bring myself to write anything. Today I wanted to. I miss you brother, more then I can put into words. You were my best friend from the first night we met. You recognized my fear of crowds and you continually took me to concerts and crowded events with an in your face way of dealing with my phobia. It always worked because you were there, right next to me making me laugh (usually at myself) but you did what friends do. Stand by them in their time of need and make them happy. So many happy times lost to such sadness. The pain of loss never really goes away it just lessens with time. I hope you're watching down on us and are enjoying the choices we make with you on our minds. I know you're watching over Laura and are proud of the woman she has become. It hasn't been easy, such a huge void left to try to fill. She has taken every good trait of you and spun it into her own personality. Seeing her is like seeing you and it makes me smile. By the way.... She took those traits and made them much more attractive. Lol.... Be well my brother, I will see you soon enough and we will have drinks to catch up on, and some really funny stories to tell. I love you brother.

Obviously this news came as a shock to all of us who knew Mike and Laura. Both of you took every chance you had to make sure and say hi to us when we were around. Having shared the same shoulder issues Mike was dealing with before his death, I felt we had a small connection. Such a loss to the world we all live in. Our condolences go out to Laura and Mike's family. Such a trying time indeed. We unfortunately can not attend the services. But prayers and thoughts are most definitely on your way. When a candle burns out and the darkness sets in it's hard to find a way to relight the candle. But I promise you will find a way.
Sincerely,
Adam & Sarah Bell
