Carol L. Fath, 74, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Taylor House Hospice. Visitation will be Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. at West Des Moines Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 4501 Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Polk City, IA.
Carol was born on March 15, 1940 in Washington, D.C. to Elizabeth (Sutphin) and Kenneth W. Burtis. She worked as a licensed Mental Health Therapist at Children and Families of Iowa until her retirement in 2006. She was a member of WDMCC since 1994 and taught Bible school and Sunday school. Carol was also a Campfire Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and volunteer at Pleasant Hill Elementary. She loved children. One of Carol’s life highlights was her church mission trip to help after hurricane Rita hit Port Arthur, TX. She loved traveling, doll collecting, playing cards, reading, and spending time wit her family and friends. Carol said her greatest achievement and gift to the world were her two daughters.
She is survived by her daughters, Shelly (Brian) Thomas of Des Moines, IA and Larissa (Tony) Spaulding of Windsor Heights, IA; her brother, Philip (Carol) Burtis of Huntington Beach, CA; six grandchildren, Tia (Brad) Wilson, Tad and Tye Thomas, Tanner, Noah and Kali Spaulding; great-grandchild, Evelyn Wilson; nephew, Justin Burtis; six step-children; and her cousins who were like siblings to her. Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dick Fath; and step-daughter, Gail Peterson.

I am so sorry to hear of Carol's passing. I knew from her survey work at NASS. She was always very pleasant and easy to work with. She enjoyed life and worked hard, that's a good legacy to leave.

Carol was a dear kind friend and we shared many laughs on the trips we made together to Idaho, Arizona, Bahamas, East Coast, Maryland and Europe. I will miss her.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Carol. I knew her since our early childhood in Wash., D.C., and although we were not related by blood, I always considered her my cousin.
As we got older, I didn't see her as often as when we were children, but it was always easy and close between us, as if no time had passed. That's the kind of warm person she was.
God bless Carol and her family.
I will miss her and remember her 'til the end of my days.

So sorry to hear of Carol's passing.She was such a good friend to all who knew her. As a co-worker at NASS I got to know her real well and marveled at the strength she showed as she fought her illness. Her smile and good nature will be greatly missed. My prayers are with you.

Larissa........I am so sorry for you and your family. Your Mother sounds like a wonderful woman and I can imagine how much she will be missed. How fortunate you all are to have her in your lives. I hope your memories will help to get you through this difficult time.
