Harold "Shorty" Law

Harold “Shorty” C. Law, 86, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at his home after a long illness. He was born September 9, 1927 in Pembina County, North Dakota to John C. Law and Pearl Rickbeil Law.

He was a longtime resident of South Des Moines and retired from Ruan Transportation after 38 years of service. Shorty was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in WWII and the Korean War. He was a longtime member of the Elks #98.

He was married to Virginia Mae Burns on March 5, 1949 and celebrated 50 years of marriage before her passing on July 11, 1999. He later married Nora Belle Casner. He enjoyed softball, bowling, golf and camping in his younger years and was a great spectator of all sports as he aged. Shorty also loved dancing, enjoying many dances not only with his wives but also his daughters and granddaughters.

Shorty is remembered by his loving wife of 14 years, Nora Belle; a son, Dennis (Joyce) Law; daughters, Rosemary (Rick) Craig and Haroldine (Larry) West, all of the Des Moines area; five grandchildren, Shannon (Mark) Alford, Colorado Springs, CO, Braedi Craig, Michelle Law, Douglas Hartman and Jessica Williams all of the Des Moines area; six great-grandchildren, Dawson Craig, Tyler, Madi, Morgan Hartman, Conner Alford and Abbi Grother; brother, LeRoy Law; sister, Esther (Don) Crowell; brothers-in-law, James (Francis) Burns, Ron (Diane) Burns and Bob (Barb) Burns; sister-in-law, Josephine Burns; five step-children; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; brother, Ed Law; and great-grandson, Colby.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Cremation and private interment will be at a later date.
