Larry Allen, 66, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines from cancer. He was born September 10, 1947, to Edwin and Dana Allen in Elmhurst, Illinois.
Larry graduated from SE Warren High School near Liberty Center, IA. He served as a Green Beret in the US Army during the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Bronze Star among other medals.
Larry was retired from the Iowa Department of Human Services where he had worked for over 30 years. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He also enjoyed camping, family vacations, and was a devoted Cubs fan.
Larry is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cheryl; brothers, Myron (Shelly) Allen and Tim (fiancé, Jen McCaslin) Allen; sister, Judy (Tom) Willey; step-mother, Ann Allen; brother-in-law, Peter (Rebecca) Logli; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Kathy Logli.
A graveside service will be held at 4:30 PM Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Altoona Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life immediately following at Terrace Hills Golf Course, 8700 NE 46th Avenue, Altoona.

I'm so sorry to hear about Larry's passing. And even more sorry I haven't kept in touch. Larry was a great man and I enjoyed every moment I was around him for golf and bowling, as well as with the laughing and jokes that went with it. We will keep Cheryl, Myron, Tim and the rest of the Allen Family in our prayers.

So sorry to hear about Larry's passing and battle with Cancer! He was such a nice guy with a great smile! I met Larry after working with his sister Judy and we traded cars! My thoughts and prayers go out to Judy and Cheryl and all the rest of his wonderful family. He will be missed...Hugs to you all!!!

I knew Larry from our work together at DHS. There never seemed to be a day that he couldn't find his SMILE! He was always a positive and upbeat person, a dedicated employee, and a delightful co-worker! He is and will be missed.

friend. I was so glad to celebrate
my wedding to Pete with Sheryl and Larry. May the family and friends of Larry recall fond memories of him as I will and miss his presence as I do.

We were so sorry to hear of Larry's passing, what a great guy he was. Both my wife, Nancy, and I knew Larry from our work with the State of Iowa. I remember Larry asking me to join his golfing group, he thoroughly enjoyed golf and the fellowship it brought him with friends. He'll be missed.

Deepest sympathy to Cheryl and the rest of Larry's family. Seeing Larry was always a bright spot in an otherwise mundane workday in the Hoover Bldg. Bowling with him was a treat. He was fun to be around and had a marvelous sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by many.
