Service Details

Our daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, Helen V. Parker, 75, passed away on May 6th, 2014, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born in Kansas City, MO on November 17, 1938.

Helen is predeceased by her father, Charles W. Parker, her sister, Wendy L. Meyer, and her friend, Dorothy L. Green. She is survived by her mother, Virginia Parker; sister, Nina Sears; brother-in-law, Gary Sears; niece, Susan Sears; nephews, Brian and Brad Sears and Chuck and William Meyer; and many friends, including Barbara Neal and her children.

Helen was a graduate of Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana where she was the fourth generation from her family to attend.
Helen lived in Des Moines, Iowa for over 50 years and loved the city and its people. She was active in her church and often expressed how the liturgy and traditions spoke to her needs and deepened her faith.

Her love for children was represented by her life-long vocation working with Camp Fire. She started as a Bluebird in the second grade, later becoming a camp counselor, and then a full time district director, concluding as a volunteer. She had a 67-year involvement with Camp Fire. She enjoyed the experiences and things she learned, the friends she made, and the children she influenced.

Helen also was employed as a bookkeeper. She had many hobbies, including stamp collecting, sewing, embroidery, scrapbooking, playing bridge, writing poetry, and playing her organ. She maintained a busy, active life until illness slowed her down in 2012.

On Saturday, May 10th, 2014, Helen’s memorial service will be held at Westminister Presbyterian church, 4114 Allison Ave. , Des Moines, IA 50310, with visitation at 1:00 p.m. and the service at 2:00 p.m.

On Friday, May 16th, 2014, a celebration of Helen’s life will be held at Chapel Hill Presbyterian church in Blue Springs, MO for her family and friends in Missouri. Visitation will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a light supper served; the service will begin at 7:15.

In lieu of flowers contributions to Heart of the Hawkeye Camp Fire, 5615 Hickman Road, Des Moines, IA, or Westminister Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Ave, Des Moines, IA, will be appreciated.

Helen touched our lives in so many ways; we will miss her, but she lives on in our memories and shared experiences. She was quiet, deep-thinking, and loyal; she loved her family and her friends very much.
