Alton Tolpingrud

Alton “Top” Tolpingrud, 83, passed away on April 29, 2014 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. He was born on December 31, 1930 in Roseau, MN, to Ole and Julia.

Top served his country proudly in the Army, Marines and was a Special Forces Green Beret. He saw combat in Korea and Vietnam and was awarded many accolades and medals for his time in the service. Top retired from the Army in 1971 and went on to work construction for RG Elder until retirement. He spent the first half of his life taking care of his country and the second half taking care of his family especially his grandson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Skuntala “Ott”; children, Joseph (Natalie) and Susan (Dan) Hollingsworth; grandchildren, David Hollingsworth and Olivia Tolpingrud; sisters, Patricia (Venzel) Johnson and Zona Morin; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kenneth and Lloyd; and a sister, Joveney.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Tops’ daughter’s home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Blank Children’s Hospital or Taylor House Hospice.
