Shirley Jean Newton, 71, was born June 19, 1942 in Sioux Rapids, the daughter of Russell and Opal (Brayton) McDanel. She passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 27, 2014.
Shirley is survived by her children, Paula (Doug) Kieler, Michael Newton and Stephen (Michelle) Newton; grandchildren, Emily (Dan) Hodges, Stephanie (Chase) Bieghler, Elyse (Jason) McClaflin, Nehemiah Newton and Caleb Newton; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Audrey, Paige, Maddox, Sophia, Eli, Mya and Jack; siblings, Ronald (Sharon) McDanel, David (Lynda) McDanel, Barbara (Ron Cox) Rohlf, Thomas (Barbara) McDanel and Marcia (Keith) Goode; nine nieces and nephews; other loving relatives and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014 at Rising Sun Church of Christ, 6390 NE Rising Sun Drive in Pleasant Hill, in which Shirley was an active member. Burial will take place at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be made to Rising Sun Church of Christ in loving memory of Shirley.

Paula and Family. I will never forget the wonderful smile Shirley willingly gave with her hugs. She always genuinely asked how we were, and meant it, not just to ask. She really wanted to know. We will miss our Christian Sister, and look forward to singing with her in Heaven.. I'm sure she sang with the choir Sunday.

Rick and I are so sorry for the loss of your Mom. We so enjoyed seeing her and giving and receiving hugs from her at Hy-Vee. She will be missed, heaven gained a special person.

Paula, Doug, and other family members - I am so sorry for your loss. Shirley was kind, and she enjoyed people. She liked to laugh. She loved Jesus her Savior. I'm glad I had the opportunity to know Shirley.
