Viola Erickson
April 16, 2014
Viola Flocile (Shold) Erickson, age 94, died April 16, 2014, of complications related to Alzheimer’s disease, at Valley View Village Nursing Center, Des Moines, IA, surrounded by her loving family.
Viola was born on June 7, 1919, in Laurens, IA to Edward and Agnes (Wenell) Shold. She lived in Albert City until she left home to take secretarial courses in Des Moines. She then worked for the Heinz Company for several years. While attending Swedish Covenant Church (later known as Evangelical Covenant Church [ECC]), Viola met her husband, E. Harold Erickson. They were married June 5, 1948.
Viola began working at ECC in the early 1960’s as the church secretary, and continued there for over 30 years until her retirement in 1999. As the church secretary, she supported several pastors and the members of the congregation with her loyalty and dedication to the Lord’s service.
In true Swedish tradition, Viola loved cooking Lutfisk, Ostkaka, and various rolls and pastries. Many had the opportunity to enjoy these delicacies at the annual smörgbsbord’s she hosted or at Christmas Eve celebrations. In addition to entertaining, she also enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, reading, bible studies and wedding planning. Viola also loved bird watching, especially cardinals.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brother (William Shold) and sister-in-law (Inez Shold). She is survived by her son, Bruce (Brenda) Erickson, her grandchildren, Brianna (Christopher) Koopman and Brian Erickson, as well as many loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held at Evangelical Covenant Church, 2625 Hubbell Avenue on Saturday, April 19, 2014 from 9:30 - 11 am followed immediately by the funeral service.
Memorial contributions in memory of Viola may be made to Evangelical Covenant Church or Valley View Village Building Fund.

I will alway's remember Viola with a smile. I remember her as a little girl at Evangelical, seeing her in the halls. She always had a gentle spirit about her. I will miss her.

I didn't get to know Viola but my mom, Maxine Cross, was Viola's roommate at Valley View Village Memory Unit. I didn't find out about the passing of Viola until Easter Sunday. Peace be with the family. My mom has lost 2 roommates in less than 2 months. RIP Viola!

It is with deep sorrow that I express my condolences to the surviving family members and countless loved ones of one of the dearest women it has been my privilege to know literally all of my life. I rejoice that she is now with her God and Savior forever, and reunited with her husband Harold and other family members in heaven. May God's peace and mercy comfort you Bruce, and your entire family during this season of mourning. Amen.
