April 12, 2014
Grant Schmeling, 30, lost his 10-year battle with a rare mitochondrial disorder on April 2, 2014. He was born on February 27, 1984 to Bob and Bev Schmeling.
In addition to his parents, Grant is survived by his sister, Inde Miller; nephew, Grady Wenner; niece, Haley Miller; aunts, uncles, cousins, and other loving relatives and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Max and Phyllis Schmeling, Oscar and Dorothy Dahl, and Lena Grant.
Grant became an Eagle Scout in December 2001 and he graduated from Southeast Polk High School in 2003. He was accepted into the Graphic Design program at DMACC where he completed three semesters. Grant was a very creative and artistic person who enjoyed writing poetry and painting.
A Celebration of Grant’s life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Altoona Christian Church, 2890 1st Ave. S. The family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Luncheon to follow service. There will be a time of reflection during the service, so if you have a special memory of Grant to share you will have an opportunity to do so. Also, if you have any photos of Grant you would be able to bring and share with his family, it would be greatly appreciated. Appropriate attire is tie dye and jeans.
Memorial contributions may be made to his family in loving memory of Grant. Funds will be donated to a children’s music therapy program to benefit children with disabilities.

Bev and family,
I was so saddened to hear about Grant. I will always remember what he said at the CPM ceremony when a question came up about how we would cover the cost of the outdoor fitness equipment - "My mom can bake cookies to raise money!" He was so sweet!!! May you find peace in the many special memories you have of Grant.

Bev and Bob,
We are very sorry to hear of your loss. We too lost a child to a Mitochondrial Disease. We have a Mito Walk every 3rd Saturday in September in Altoona. We have the walk in memory of those lost to Mitochondrial disease and we follow it up with a Family Fun Fest in honor of those still living with Mito.
We want you to know you are not alone. We will be praying God comforts you at this time and for the years to come.
Please check out savannahshope.com and we would love to have you come walk this fall in memory of Grant.
Take care and God bless. Willie Bagby
