Donald Malcolm Steele, 73, died Monday, March 31, 2014, surrounded by family at home in Carlisle, Iowa. Donald was born on October 26, 1940, in Highland Park, Michigan, to Mary Beth (Atherton) Pritchard and Malcolm Charles Steele. During childhood, “Donnie” and his family relocated to Bondurant, Iowa. He graduated from Saydel High School in 1958. With great pride, he served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1965.
Donnie worked nearly thirty years for Otis Elevator, retiring in March 1999. Two years into retirement, he began working for Tompkins Industries.
Donald married Judith K. Robinson on December 2, 1977. He loved fishing, stock car racing, and gardening. In his later years, he enjoyed developing his own secret recipes for smoked meats and watching television movies with his beloved dog, Sugar.
Survivors include his children, Laura L. Steele of West Des Moines, Donald S. Steele (Joni) of Des Moines, and Dana Ferris (Ryan) of Ankeny; step-children Kelly Schuring (Carl) of Otley and Karey Larkin of Waukee; one grandchild; seven step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Douglas Steele (Linda) of Minburn and Kevin Pritchard (Susan) of Jacksonville, FL. Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Dennis Steele.
The family will greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, April 3rd, 2014, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m, Friday, April 4, 2014, also at the funeral home. A committal service will take place at 12:30 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
