Charles W. Young, 90, lost his battle with cancer Friday, March 21, 2014, at HCI Care Services 56th.
Charles was born May 20, 1923, in Coon Rapids, Iowa, to Julius and Sylvia Young. He had lived in the Des Moines area most of his life. Charles proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He retired from Pittsburg Des Moines Steel where he had worked as a punch press operator for many years. Charles enjoyed being outside, going to parks and vegetable gardening. He was an avid Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball fan. Charles also enjoyed bowling, playing pitch and spades, and shooting pool.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Suzette Hartman, Linda Young-Hess, and Patricia Conlin; sons, Michael Young, Jeffrey Young, Douglas Young, and John Young; sister, Virginia Leonard; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernice (Kincaid) Young, and sisters, Roma Madison and Nita Ratliff.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. A private family burial will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery.

We send our condolences to the entire family. We enjoyed having Charlie as a neighbor. As a caregiver you always look out for people. It became habit over the years to look out for Charlie. We sure will miss him. The neighborhood will miss him.
