Naomi Johnston

Naomi Virginia Johnston, 97, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2014 one hour prior to service from 10-11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Johnston with funeral services following at the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Johnston with burial following at Glendale Cemetery

Naomi was born April 30, 1916 in Adams County to H.H. (Hade) and Millie (Madison) DeVore and raised on a farm near Corning, Iowa. She graduated from Massena High School in 1933 and went on to complete another year of formal education. She taught school in a one room school house for many years. She then met her husband Millard Johnston, and they were married and moved to the Des Moines area where they lived most of their lives. They were blessed with one child, daughter Jana. Naomi then worked for Des Moines Public Schools, and also worked for Younkers retiring in 1981.

She is survived by her daughter, Jana Jongewaard of Clive, IA., brother, Robert DeVore of Elk Horn IA., and grandson, Arthur “AJ” Jongewaard of Brooklyn, NY.

Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, H.H.(Hade) and Millie DeVore; husband, Millard; and sister Darlene Conatser.

Memorial contributions may be directed to benefit First Baptist Church, Johnston Iowa in Naomi’s loving memory.
