Fredrick J. Scheffers

Fred Scheffers, 68, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Fred was born December 23, 1945 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Rosella and Albert Scheffers. He proudly served his country in the Air Force from March 15, 1965 until March 14, 1971. He also served in the Air National Guard and the Air Police. He was an independent painter by trade, running Painting by Scheffers for many years. He was a talented woodworker, taking part in many craft shows with his wife Betty. Fred was a devoted family man and loved spending time with his grandsons. He had a passion for El Caminos and would candidly tell people he loved fast cars and hot women. Fred was a NASCAR fan and loved to pass the time visiting and telling stories. He was one of a kind and will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Fred is survived by his daughter, Cindy Scheffers; daughter-in-law, Tina Scheffers; grandsons, Christopher Underwood, Kyle Underwood, Justin Scheffers, Tyler Scheffers (Cassandra Wruck), and Johnathan Scheffers; great-grandson, Jeffrey Scheffers; brothers, Mike Scheffers and Ernest Scheffers; half-sisters, Laura Esplen (Dennis) and Florence Howk (Loren); and lifelong “brother” and best friend, Jack Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 45 years, Betty; and son, Jeffrey.
There will be a visitation from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family in Fred’s memory.

Dear Fred, As a neighborhood friend, a classmate, a carousing friend, partner in crime, an Air Force buddy-plan friend and a long time friend I am certainly going to miss you..The memories and laughter we shared will be with me forever...When we meet on the other side, I'll bring a Pepsi to share...your half on the bottom!!
