Leonard "Mike" Mackey

Leonard “Mike” Mackey passed away peacefully at his home Friday, February 28, 2014 surrounded by his loved ones.

Mike was born on July 24, 1944 to Clifford and Eva Mackey. He graduated from Des Moines Abraham Lincoln High School in 1963. He served in the US Marine Corp as a Lance Corporal from 1967 – 1969, where he earned three purple hearts. He was a retiree from the railroad after 36 years of service.

Mike loved camping, cooking, golfing, morning coffee, and the simple things in life. More than anything, Mike loved his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Linda; his children: Kris, Mike (Missy), Penny (Troy), and Pat; grandchildren: Lindsey, Becky, Robert, Kelsy, Sheena, Blade, Dakota, and Makayla; seven great-grandchildren, with one on the way; as well as many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Eva; his brothers, Tom, Chuck, and Bobby; great-grandchild, Jamie Lee; and his beloved dog, “Puppy”.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 3, also at the funeral home, with burial at Glendale Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Mike.

The family would like to thank Dr. Quinn and Nurse Cassandra, but most of all for the exceptional care by his granddaughter, Sheena, for taking care of her “Lenny” and making his final days comfortable and happier than anyone could have.
