John Izzolena, 78, passed away Monday, February 24, 2014. He was born January 27, 1936 to Fred and Lena Izzolena in Des Moines, Iowa.
John went to Lincoln High School. He married Dicta Nielsen on May 10, 1958. He served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. Returning to Des Moines, he worked as a master carpenter until his retirement in 1998. John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. He also had a fondness for animals.
He is survived by his children, Joni (John) Krois of Waukee, IA, John (Denise) Izzolena of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Jani (Tom) Campbell of Altoona, IA; grandchildren, Lauren Campbell, Jason (Sara) Campbell, Brad Campbell and Adam Krois; one great grand-daughter, Leila Campbell; and sisters, Helen, Stella, Patty, Lucille and Judy.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dicta; his parents; infant son, John Matthew; sisters, Mary, Victoria, Lena, Marguerite, Josephine and Rose; and brothers, Carmie, Jim, Anthony, Alfred and Sam.
Family will greet friends on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 from 6 to 8pm at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road, Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 10:00 am.
Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Anthony’s Church or Mercy Hospice.

This family was important to me when I was small; Johnnie was my best friend and the girls and I played together often. I remember well how patient and kind John was to us kids; sitting through dance routines in the basement, providing jars for catching bugs and 2x4's pieces for building ramps and buildings for our GI Joes and Barbies. I was blessed to go with John, Dicta, and the kids to John's mom's place several times and meet a lot of his huge, fun, nice family. Years later, John always remembered me and asked after my folks whenever I'd run into him. I will always remember John for his smile, his laughter, his patience, and his kindness. My deepest sympathies go out to Joni, John, Jani and the rest of the family during this sad time.
