John Edsill, 64, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, February 20, 2014. He was born November 21, 1949, to Merlin and Patricia Edsill in Waterloo, Iowa.
John was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Viet Nam Era. He was a member of Capitol Hill Christian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Berla; children, Chris (Marianne); Hollie (Brian) Lawry and Erica (Tim) Voll; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild on the way; father, Merlin; siblings, Vicky, Andi and Danny; as well as many friends and extended family.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia; sister, Dianne.
Friends may visit with family from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held, 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Capitol Hill Christian Church, with burial to follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.
Memorial Contributions may be directed to Capitol Hill Christian Church in loving memory of John.

I just want to let you all know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. John was a great guy and such a nice man. He also treated me like one of the family!

I love you my dear brother, I can't believe you are gone. Berla, Chris, Hollie, Erica and families, you are in my heart, thoughts and prayers. With God's help we will get through this together. Revelation 2:4 says, He will wipe away every tear from their eyes....
Also, I found this in a magazine once and believe it to be true.
Someday God will wipe away your tears. The same hands that stretched the heavens will touch your cheek.The same hands that formed the mountains will caress your face. The same hands that curled in agony as the Roman spike cut through will someday cup your face and brush away your tears,Forever. I love you all.

I love you Daddy and I miss you so much. My heart is breaking. I can only imagine what it was like for you to see Grandma and all of our relatives. I bet it was quite a reception. Uncle John, I will miss your smile hearing your laugh and your spunky personality at our family gatherings. You will be greatly missed. I find comfort in knowing your with our Heavenly Father reunited with your Mother and Sister. It is just harder for those of us left here to deal with the void of your loss. So I pray for Aunt Berla ,Chris, Hollie, Erica & Grandpa and the rest of our family that they find some comfort and peace in the days to come. Love you All. Nae

So sorry for your loss BJ, Erica and family. John was such an upbeat person and loved the kids at Capitol Hill, especially his buddy Royal. He will be missed greatly. Remember his smile, and just take one day at a time.
