Ulysses "Shorty" West

Ulysses C. “Shorty” West passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Genesis Senior Living Center in Des Moines. He was born November 18, 1945 in Navasota, Texas to Ira Sr. and Tetter (Jenkins) West.

Ulysses was a dairy rancher for 45 years. He retired in 2007 and moved to Des Moines in 2009. Ulysses received Jesus Christ at a very young age and became a member of Red Hill Baptist Church in Navasota, Texas. He was cheerful and jolly with a great sense of humor. Ulysses will be remembered for his kind heart and thoughtfulness towards others.

He is survived by his sisters, Bertha West Milam, Joyce West Free, Elaine West Irvin, Bernice Washington, Martha West Harris, Mary West Kirkpatrick, Ollie Mae Ross and Laura Brown; brothers, George West, Ira West Jr., Robert West and Elijah West; five brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.

Ulysses was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Janice West Clay and Inell West Chatman.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
