Everett Ray Scott, 91, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Arbor Springs, West Des Moines.

Everett was born January 18, 1923 in Boone County, Iowa to Will and Carrie Scott. He served in the Navy Air Corps during WWII and earned his wings in the Navy. Following the war, he owned and operated Scott’s Flying Service in Boone, Iowa.

Everett opened his first motel in Des Moines in 1952. He then built his second motel in 1959. In 1973, he expanded that motel into what is now known as the Airport Holiday Inn. After retiring in 1990, he built the largest Haviland China Matching Service in the country.

Everett enjoyed business, his apple orchard, his lake home and spending time with his family. He was an active member of Wakonda Christian Church for over 50 years.

Everett is survived by his wife, Ruthann; children, Linda (Jim) Harrold, Larry (Kathie) Scott, Loretta (Dave) Durden and Lowell (Tamara) Scott; step sons, Steven (Lois) Clark and Kevin (Bonita) Clark; brother, Paul (Marge) Scott; eleven grandchildren; six step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 57 years, Mary Etta.

The family will greet friends Saturday, February 22, 2014, beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at Wakonda Christian Church, 3938 Fleur Drive.
