Paul J. Umphress

Paul Joseph Umphress Sr., 94, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He was born April 9, 1919 in Woodward, Iowa to Clarence and Faye Umphress.

Paul worked for Brooks Bros Grocery Store in his teen years until he enlisted in the Iowa National Guard. He was directly deployed for service in WWII. Paul spent the next several years abroad in Ireland, Scotland, Algiers, North Africa, Italy and Austria before being released to return to the United States. Upon discharge, he attained the rank of Sergeant. He retired from Northwestern Bell after 38 years of service.

Paul is survived by his children, Thomas (Lea Ann) Umphress, Stephen Umphress, William (Christine) Umphress, Geraldine Best and David Umphress; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Neil (Betty) Umphress; sisters, Madge Gale, Marguerite Leo and Ruth (Donald “Bub”) Eaton; son, Paul Joseph Umphress, Jr. and daughter, Paula Mary Harvey.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014 followed by a visitation until 4 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.
