Theresa Marie Hutt, 86, former long-time resident of Beaverdale, passed away at Lantern Park Rehab in Coralville, Iowa on Sunday, February 9, 2014.
Theresa was born May 9, 1927 in Hamilton, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Verna (Fedro) Mattise. She earned her affectionate nickname “Tuffy” due to her strength of character and resiliency. Theresa was employed at Northland Dairy where she met her husband, Bob. They were united in marriage May 24, 1952 and welcomed their son, Martin in 1954. Theresa was so proud of her family and was especially close with her only great-grandson, Gavin. She was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed working in her yard. Theresa was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Beaverdale. She and her husband, Bob, co-founded Capital City Ambulance in 1966.
Terry is survived by her son, Martin (Diane) of North Liberty, IA; grandchildren, Erin (Trisha) of North Liberty, IA and Marcy (Bob Oxley) of West Branch, IA; step-grandchildren: Traci (Bob) Massey of Coralville, IA, Troy (Sara) Anderson of Iowa City, IA, and Jess (Jake) Byram of North Liberty, IA; great-grandson, Gavin Oxley of West Branch, IA; step-great-grandchildren: Jack, Ruby, Mae, Brad, Estelle, Lily, and Lincoln; sisters, Dorothy Morgan of Bussey, IA and Barb (Junior) Pottorff of Hamilton, IA; as well as several special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; and her siblings, Charles Mattise of Hamilton, IA, Edward Mattise of Des Moines, and Irene VanderSluis of Knoxville, IA.
Services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014. Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 14 with burial at Glendale Cemetery.

Terri was a very wonderful and hard working lady. I knew her for 49+ yrears and it started when she was the official bookkeeper for CCA. She did a fantastic job there. Her son Marty and I have been friends for all those years and it is so, so sad to hear of her passing - but I know she is existing now in a land of peace, tranquility and respect. I will miss and think of her often, as well as her husband who passed on a few years back. Bob was a great boss and a fair man. I worked for Bob for several years, working with Marty, Bob and many other drivers and EMT's. Marty - I have always had lots of respect for you, Bob and Terri. The Hutt family will always remain close to my heart. Terri always was questioning the doctors and the whole medical system and was't afraid to express her opinion with you either. She could do so much with very little because she grew up when times were hard and that's the way she lived her whole life. I can remember when Bob would tell her to just go out and buy it and quit complaining, we have the money. There are so many memories that I have over the fifty year friendship we have shared. And for all the good things she has done for others there is no doubt that God has a special place for ole Ma Hutt.

One of my fondest family memories growing up was going to see Aunt Terry. She would always greet us warmly at the backdoor and tell us to be careful coming up the stoop. Once inside shed ask if we would like anything to eat or drink, which would often mean fresh baked cookies or a piece of homemade pie. My brother and I would try to take her up on the offer and on a really good day we would also get a can of Shasta soda pop! Once finished, we'd sneak off into the living room where she always kept the candy jar well stocked
Warmly, my 13-year-old son Robby also had the chance to visit her several times at home over the years. They shared a great connection and she would always say when she saw him, "well theres my boyfriend" and give him a hug, before he headed to the living room to look for the candy jar!
I'm so thankful God led us to Coralville last summer and gave us the chance to visit and say goodbye one last time. Although the time was short our memories will last a lifetime. Rest in peace Aunt Terry.
