Angelo P. Costanzo, 91 years old, passed away February 8, 2014, in Des Moines at Kavanagh House on 56th Street.
Angelo was born to Tom and Maria Costanzo on July 30, 1922. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941 and attended Iowa State University before entering military service in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. His World War II service in the Pacific Theater included New Guinea, South Philippines, and Luzon. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in January, 1946.
Following military service Angelo married Ann Graziano on October 20, 1946. For 40 years he was a Sales Representative for Graziano Brothers in the greater Des Moines area. He was member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Italian American Club and an active member of American Legion Post 659, where he supported veterans by working Monday Night Bingo and holding positions such as Post Commander and County Commander. Angelo was also an avid golfer, mall-walker and donut shop connoisseur.
He is preceded in death by his parents Tom and Maria Costanzo, brothers Tom and Bill and son-in-law Sam Leto. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ann Costanzo, children Tom (Susan) Costanzo, Joyce Leto, Mike (Mary) Costanzo and Joe (Ginger) Costanzo, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include his sister Rose (Costanzo) Graziano of Clarkston MI and brother Joe Costanzo of Huntington Beach, CA and sister-in- law Marcella Kay Costanzo.
A visitation service at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, Des Moines, will be held Thursday, February 13, 2014, 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a Legion Service at 6:00 p.m. and Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, February 14, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Church at 15 Indianola Avenue, Des Moines, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Angelo P. Costanzo to St. Anthony Catholic church.
The family wants to express their thanks to Lutheran Hospital and Kavanagh House for their care.

I am blessed to be able to call him my Papo. I if I have sons that grow up to be half the man my grandpa was, I will be proud. He came to sporting events since I remembered and taught me so much, even how to move my ears!

We loved Angelo so much. He was a great gentleman and wonderful friend and neighbor. God just didn't make many like Angelo. Our deepest sympathies

Tony, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. America loses another member of the "Greatest Generation" and a hero. Angelo was at my dad's funeral as a member of the Post detail and from that day forward, we always talked either at Saint Anthony or at HyVee. He always called me Mike, and after about the third time, I thought Mike is not such a bad name. He is truly going to be missed.

Our entire Michigan family will sorely miss our dearest Uncle Angelo!! We loved visiting him and Aunt Annie in Iowa as often as we could! He will always be fondly and lovingly remembered by each of us. We are sending love and good thoughts to Aunt Annie and the extended Costanzo family.

I was lucky to know Angelo for years and his lovely wife Anne, who worked with my Mom at Younkers. And Angelo worked with my Uncle Micky Sposeto at Graziano's. My husband got to know Angelo at the Legion post, always a really great guy. Will miss him.
