Shirley J. (Jones) Young was born August 6, 1933 in Des Moines to Lee Carlisle and Alma Rainwater. She passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines and the age of 80.
She is survived by her children: Johnny Young, Jr. (Sue), Ronnie Young, Sr. (Barb), Kate McCaughey, Cheryl Connelly (Danny), and Connie Cage (Cliff); eight grandchildren: Brian (Anna), Troy (Xiomara), Ronnie (Zeka), Sara (Aaron), Chelli, Kristi (Rick), Christopher, and Anna (Denny); fifteen great-grandchildren: Lexi (Matt), Cameron, Hunter, Christopher, Bonnie, Ronnie, Alicia, Robbie, Austin, Josie, Maddox, Darrion, Sedona, Sommer, and Lily; and three great-great-grandchildren, Bentley, Maverick, and Colton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Young, Sr.; and grandson, “Little Johnny”.
A celebration of life will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 14 at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

I am the baby of Shirley Jean's grandchildren. It's difficult to put into words how much my grandma meant to me. She was a strong willed, independent woman. She was very unpredictable, sassy and free spirited. She passed a lot of that down to her children who I am happy to say they passed on to me. My grandma lived her life to the fullest and on her own terms to the end. She loved her family, she loved her friends, she loved her dog "baby girl", she loved to fish and enjoy the outdoors.
My grandma inspired me in a lot of ways and, at times I find myself mimicking her ways good and bad!
We had a special bond, I spent every summer with her at the lake house, spent my weekends with her, just as my mom did with her grandma Alma and as my children do with their grandma, my mom Connie.
She meant more to me than words can express. I will always remember the times we spent together and I will love and miss her forever.

My sincerest condolences to the entire "Young" family. I am so sorry for your loss. I'm happy to think that she has joined your Dad once again. She is in a better place now, and no longer suffering, which is a blessing. God bless, and love to you all!

I took care of grandma in her home last year for about 6 months. I cooked for her, gave her medicine and and attempted to enforce good health habits. I say attempted because as most know, she was very stubborn and usually didn't think twice about giving her opinion about something she didn't like! During those 6 months she told me stories of her youth, described to me the hardships of her life, as well as highlights.I got to know her better not only as a grandmother, but as a woman, and as a friend. We grew incredibly close, and I couldn't be any more grateful for the time we shared. I am happy that she is with grandpa now - she was ready. I will miss her terribly.
