Service Details

Albert Hamilton, Jr., 82, left this world peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Albert lived a life of helping others. He took great pride in the work he did operating a bulldozer. He was the second African American in the state of Iowa to work with heavy equipment. One of his great accomplishments was helping with the building of the main Post Office in Des Moines. In step with his helpful nature, Albert was a drug and alcohol counselor for Broadlawns, Army Post, and Marshalltown.

Albert’s birthday was Election Day and, in the true spirit of Albert, he was involved in the elections being the Election Chair many times in Des Moines.

Albert gave his time to Easter Seals of Iowa for over 16 years, selling gifts that Iowans with disabilities had made. He was also an icon at the Iowa State Fair. He was a strolling guitarist in the Cultural Center, gracing us with his many songs and talents.

Albert wrote music and had a love for photography, art, and animals. He had a passion for women’s rights. Albert was very active with Christ Renews His Parish at St. Ambrose Church, where he and his wife Harriet became converts in 1975.

Albert’s life was about helping others until liver cancer became too great and his body couldn’t survive. At this time no services are planned, but when you think of Albert remember this: He was loved, and his sprit of love will continue to encircle us.
