Sarafina Carlor, 17, was born July 17, 1996, in Liberia, West Africa, the daughter of Mackie Carlor and Comfort Kaioh. She immigrated to Des Moines in 2006. After battling brain cancer since May 2013, she passed away January 29, 2014, at ChildServe in Johnston.

Sarafina attended Greenwood and Woodlawn Elementary Schools, Meredith and Callahan Middle Schools, and was currently a junior at Roosevelt High School. She was a talented artist and enjoyed drawing, sewing and singing. Sarafina was also a part of an International Art Show through The Polk County Heritage Gallery. Sarafina faithfully attended church and Bible study. During the last few years before she died, she developed a deep expression of her faith in Jesus. She wanted to become a fashion designer and her clothes always expressed her ability to coordinate colors and styles.

Sarafina is survived by her mother, Comfort Kaioh (Peter Kemokai); father, Mackie Carlor; sisters, Chudier Dang, Willet Carlor, Decontee Carlor, and Odel Mackie Carlor; maternal grandparents, Eddie and Ruth Kaioh; paternal grandparents, Samuel Carlor and Alice Jah; many aunts, uncles, cousins and beloved friends. Her bright, wonderful personality will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. on March 1, at Kyles AME Zion Church, 907 15th St., Des Moines, with burial to follow at Oralabor Cemetery in Ankeny. The family will greet friends during a visitation on the same day from 10 to 11:30 at Kyles before the funeral.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Sarafina.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Hospital, Blank Children’s Hospital, and ChildServe for their compassionate care for Sarafina. The family offers special thanks to friends, family, and even strangers who prayed and walked this difficult journey with them.
