Michael D. Baker, 49, of Des Moines, left us far too soon on January 24, 2014. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 1001 S. James St. in Grimes, IA.
Mike loved sports, but nothing would surpass his passion for his family. They were his pride, his joy, his soul, his reason for being. To his wife, children and grandchildren, he is remembered for his love, devotion and easy laugh. To his siblings, he is remembered as the mischievous little brother and an accident waiting to happen. To all he was the rock, the family core.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his children, Kyle (Brynn), Holli and Cole; grandsons, Jaedyn, Jaxyn and Behr; siblings, Gail, Kelly Loftus, and Jack; nieces and nephews; and many other family and friends who were fortunate enough to enter his orbit. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Donna Baker.

As a neighbor, Mike always had a warm smile and a kind word to say. Whether it was through the back yard, or when he was walking past our house, he had such an easy spirit about him. The wonderful tributes speak to a man who loved his family deeply, was respected by most anyone who met him, and how greatly his loss is felt.
To Deb and the children, may peace, love and healing be with you during this very difficult time.

I had the privilege and pleasure of working closely with Mike for the last two years. It was a great partnership and one I will always cherish.
His sense of humor, kindness and compassion made him a great leader. Mike understood the important things in life, family and friends.
I will miss him.

Cole and Matthew played on the same baseball team the summer of 2007. So, we were able to get to know Mike through sports. Deb and kids, Matthew and I are so sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

I worked with "Baker" for too short a time. I was so disappointed when there was a realignment and I found out I didn't get to work for him. He was the greatest! To his wife, children, grandchildren, he loved you all very much. You are all he spoke of. I'm sorry for your loss and for everyone's. My heart is heavy today. Baker, RIP

To the family of Mike Baker, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I was fortunate enough to have worked many years with Mike. He was a great manager, mentor, and close personal friend. I enjoyed many travels with Mike for work that could have just as well been pleasure, as Mike had a special way of making work fun. Even in the most difficult situations, we could look at each other and smile at the end of the day. I can't ever remember a discussion in which one of the family members were not mentioned: whether it was Cole's baseball or wrestling, Holly's softball or school, Kyle, Brynn or the grand kids. He always made clear his love for Deb and his siblings as well. He was very proud of all of you and was not afraid to bring up his faith. I will definitely miss Mike, as you will. I pray for God's blessings on you. May God give you peace, strength, and the endurance to continue on with your accomplishments and working towards your goals. I know that this is what Mike would wish for you. I also know that he is still on the sidelines watching!
Mike, thank you for the memories and everything you have done for my family and me. I look forward to seeing you in God's Kingdom. A life well done Mr. Baker!

I had the opportunity to work with Mike in Wichita and enjoyed every minute of it. There were alot of laughs when Mike was around and he was a great co-worker. I'm so sorry to hear about his passing and send my prayers to his family and friends.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mike's passing. I had the honor and pleasure of knowing him for many years as a co-worker and as a friend. Whenever I would pass Mike in the halls at work, and ask "How's it going?", he would always talk about his kids. With Mike, his family indeed came first. Without a doubt, I'm a better person for having known Mike. My thoughts and prayers are with Deb and the family during this most difficult time.
