Service Details

Lino Gerardo Bernal, 46, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Mercy Hospice after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Visitation will be Thursday, January 23, 2014, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home on Westown Parkway from 5-7 PM with a Wake and Rosary at 7 PM. Funeral services will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2926 Beaver Avenue in Beaverdale, at 10:30 AM Friday, January 24, 2014, with burial following at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter.

Lino was born December 20, 1967, at Mercy Hospital to Lino and Estolia Bernal. He was raised in Des Moines and graduated from Dowling High School in 1986. He attended Grandview College and joined the Iowa Army National Guard where he has proudly served for the last 27 years. Lino was an avid bicyclist and spent countless hours riding the bike trails and roads across Iowa. RAGBRAI was always one of the highlights of every year and Lino spent hours planning and preparing for that special week of every July. The people he met while riding bike were some of his most treasured friends. Lino’s other two passions were camping with his family and friends and hunting with his two sons. There was nothing better for Lino than sitting around a campfire at night or putting on a hunting vest and heading out into the cold with his boys. He was looking forward with great anticipation to the day when he would be able to begin taking his daughter hunting.

Lino leaves behind his loving wife Dawn; their children Isaiah, Zachary, Arianna and Jonah; his mother Estolia Bernal; and sisters Lucille (John) Tarpey and Rosa (Randy)Shuman. He will be greatly missed by all of those that were fortunate enough to have met him and shared his life. He was welcomed at Heaven’s gates by the open arms of his father, Lino, his sister Gloria (Bernal) Waite and his mother-in-law Kathy Thome. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
