Margie Dodson, 92, passed away at her home in Humeston, Iowa on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.
Margie was born July 31, 1921 in Des Moines to Ethel (Backstrom) and George Castle. She was a great cook. Margie enjoyed sewing, outdoor picnicking, family gatherings/reunions and playing cards with anyone willing to play. She loved animals and they loved her – always gravitated to her – and she treated them like they were her own kids. Her grandchildren were her life’s joy and she was very close to them. Margie will most be remembered for her outstanding memory – she never forgot a thing. She will be greatly missed.
Margie is survived by her children, Connie Harlan, Marilyn (Larry) Brown, Susan (Ray) Christian, Carole Lynn (Lonnie) Brandel and Vernon Dodson; grandchildren, Diane (Danny) McMains, Lora (Jeffrey) Alexander, Amy (Nathan) Running, Matthew (Christi) Poppler, Clayton Christian, Levi Christian, Isaiah Christian, Sarah (Aaron) Neely and Elizabeth (John) Tonsi ; great-grandchildren, Trevor , Dylan, Dustin and Tiffany McMains, Max Alexander, Alex, Parker, and Jaxson Running, Lily Poppler, Naomi, Abigail, Michael and Gabriel Neely, Lexi, Chloe and Lydia Tonsi; and extended family of four grandsons, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Castle and Ethel (Backstom) Castle-McMurray; first husband, Stanley Harlan and second husband, Vernon B. Dodson; and her son, Mark; granddaughter, Heidi Daly and sister, Betty Roland.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in loving memory of Margie.

My sympathies to the family.
Margie and my mom Evelyn Dowell were cousins along with mom's siblings Dorothy, Bernice, Norma, Eddy. Mom and Margie stayed in touch with each other throughout life until mom's death in 2000. Mom was very fond of Margie and always referred to Margie as "such a sweet kid". I am not sure but I think Margie may have lived with Mom and Dad for awhile during her husband Vernon's military service.
I met Margie on several occasions at Moms and I met several of you children. I remember Mark and Vernon as one of them lived with Margie near mom on SE 6th and one of them also lived next door to my aunt dorothy on SE 8th st.
I had no idea your mother resided in Humeston. We have a farm down near Lineville and spend the majority of our time there.

I write this in memory of one of my first true mentors for what it means to be a strong woman, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and how to truly enjoy life through family and a love for living. I will never forget Margie and everything I've learned from her. I also am forever grateful for all she has given, and she should be very happy knowing how much her favorite legacy- her family- are truly sharing her joy through their own relationships. Thanks, Margie. I hope to keep learning and be more like you one day.
