Clarence N. (“Clancy” or “Dick”) Dickson, 91, went to Heaven on December 29, 2013, at Wesley Acres. Clancy was born on July 8, 1922, in Des Moines, IA to Charles W. and Delta Snow Dickson, who preceded him in death. He was married March 26, 1955 at Grace Methodist Church to Leotha (“Lee”) Karst. Lee and Clancy lived in Urbandale, IA for 36 years, West Des Moines for 13 years, and moved to Wesley Acres Grand in 2008.

Clancy was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in January, 1940. In February 1940 he became employed at The Central National Bank in Des Moines as a messenger. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942 to1947. He was a Sergeant in the 95th Finance Section, serving in England and France. Upon return to the United States he was accepted as an Officer Candidate at the U.S. Army Finance School and graduated as a 2nd Lt. He served active-duty as an Asst. Finance Officer at several installations until his discharge in 1947. He entered the Reserves and was assigned to the 103rd Infantry Division headquartered at Ft. Des Moines. He was re-called to Active Duty in the Air Force during the Korean War. Clancy returned to work at Central National Bank, where he became a bank officer. Clancy played on the bank’s softball, basketball and bowling teams. He was a graduate of the Des Moines Chapter of The American Institute of Banking (AIB); he was an instructor in banking classes for 17 years, a past President of the D.M. Chapter, and one of 12 nationwide speech contestants for the A. P. Giannini Trophy at the Nat’l Convention. He was presented with a lifetime membership in the Institute in 1984. He retired from his banking career after 44 years of service. He coached little girl’s softball in the Urbandale League. In 1973 he organized a slow-pitch team for Aldersgate Methodist Church and was manager and pitcher for the team for 20 years; Clancy continued playing until he was 83 years old. He served on the Board of the Urbandale Sports Assoc. and his team was and is the only church team to have played continuously for 30 years in the Urbandale Men’s League. Clancy’s favorite sports were slow-pitch, fishing, and golf. He was a lifetime Methodist and served as Sunday school teacher, Lay Leader, and Financial Secretary and was a dedicated member of the Methodist Men’s group. Clancy served as Past President of the Des Moines Exchange Club, was a former Board Member of Goodwill Industries, and a volunteer for Hospice of Central Iowa; he was also a lifetime Republican.

Clancy is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Lee; daughter, Diane (Rick) Hanson of Northwood, IA; and grandsons, Kyle (Andrea) Hanson and Cody Hanson; daughter, Jean (Ken) Rostron of Llano, TX; and granddaughters, Kelsey and Allie Rostron; his brother, Charles W. Dickson, Jr. of Des Moines, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

On Saturday, January 4, 2014, a time of greeting will be at 9:45 a.m. and a celebration of life service at 10:30 a.m., both at Aldersgate UMC, 3600 75th Street in Urbandale, with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Memorial Fund of Aldersgate Methodist Church, Hospice of Central IA on 56th Street, or the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Acres.
