Robert G. Carper, Jr., age 88, passed away on December 18, 2013 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born on August 14, 1925, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Dr. Robert G. Carper and Elizabeth Carper. Robert was a life-long resident of Iowa.

Prior to graduation from Roosevelt High School Class of 1943, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and immediately reported for boot camp in San Diego, California upon graduation. His three-year tour of duty was spent serving in the South Pacific, and ended with him being a member of the first landing crew to enter Japan at the end of WWII.

In 1953 Robert moved to Boone, Iowa and established a 40+ year successful career with Fareway stores until his retirement in 1995. A scholarship was established in his name recognizing his dedicated service to the business.

Robert was a long-time member of the BPOE, moving through the chairs and eventually serving as Exalted Ruler. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, and fishing with friends and family as well as dancing to his beloved country music.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty J. Carper; children, Robert G. Carper, III of Boone, IA, Lynne Jordan of Des Moines, IA, Margie (Bill) Townsend of Greenville, SC, Randy L. (Theresa) Carper of Parkton, MD, and Rick Carper of Boone, IA; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; his sister, Louise Thomas of Sunnyvale, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines on Friday, December 27, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Inurnment will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
