Howard Shelton

Howard L. Shelton was born December 20, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Marian (Titus) and Clarence Shelton. He was a lifelong resident of the Des Moines area. Howard proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. He loved spending time with his family. Howard had a passion for racing. He was always in the garage working on his race car and loved attending the races at the track. He enjoyed the banjo and country music and was a member of Grant Park Christian Church.

Howard passed away peacefully at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at the age of 90.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines on Friday, December 20, 2013. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. with funeral services immediately following at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery after the funeral.

He is survived by his wife, Mina Shelton and children: Dixie (James) Holdridge, Irene (Dennis) Henderson and Danny (Ruth) Shelton. Howard is also survived by his grandchildren: Mike Wright, Pamela Wright, Cindy Thomas, Dennis Henderson, Larry Shelton and Laura Dillon; great-grandchildren: Matthew Wright, Michael Wright, Jason Wright, Nick Shellenberg, Emmy Thomas, Zach Henderson, Madi Henderson, Kaden Dillon and Danna Dillon; several great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Betty Smith, Norma VanGorp, Joy Owens and Mary Lou; and brothers: Jerry, David and Jimmy Shelton.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Johnny and Clarence; grandsons, Bernard Wright and Ben Shelton; great-grandchildren, Jamie Wright and Justin Wright; and four brothers.
