Mavis I. Whitney

Mavis Irene Whitney, 76, died Friday, December 13, 2013 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. She was born November 11, 1937 to Marvin and Mabel Gillman in Millerton, Iowa.

Mavis graduated from Woodside High School and was a secretary for the ISU Extension Service for many years. She enjoyed calligraphy, tennis, basketball, gardening, and flowers. She attended Eastside Alliance Church, Westview Community Alliance Church, and Grace Church.

Mavis is survived by her husband of 56 years, Norman; children, Christine Peterson, David (Kimberly) Whitney, Steven (Julie) Whitney, and Stacey (Jonathan) Skeens; ten grandchildren; brother, Gilbert (Judy) Gillman; brothers-in-law, Robert Urich, Gordon (Beverly) Whitney, and James (Kathy) Whitney; and a host of other family and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by parents; and sister, Margaret Urich.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with burial to follow at Greenwood Friends Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
